2008 Atlantic Challenge

  HORTA to PORTSMOUTH

Depart 21st May (1370 nm)

Why not take part in our 2007 Atlantic Challenge? I.O.S will be offering individual berths on 4 identical Farr 65’s for this 1,370 nm challenge.

The port of Horta will be the start of the challenge and is famous in the sea-faring community all around the world. A visit to Peter’s Café Sport is a must, during your visit to the Azores, her you can enjoy a refreshing gin and tonic and have the chance to buy the obligatory tee shirt!

Sheltered and safe, the marina is an open-air art gallery, exhibiting some wonderful paintings from the many yachtsmen from around the world who have visited these islands of fire and flowers.

Legend has it that those who depart this mid Atlantic crossroad and fail to fulfill the tradition will be struck by bad luck and strong head winds After completing our wall painting! we set sail on the 1370 nm ocean passage back to Portsmouth that will take us up into the Northern latitudes where hopefully we reach the top of the famous Azores high to join the conveyor belt of low pressure systems that produce the favorable Westerly winds for a fast and exhilarating down wind sail back to Portsmouth

A great opportunity will be available on this voyage for people wishing to do their Ocean Yachtmaster course. The theory, practical and oral exams can be done with I.O.S who are the only company in the UK to offer all three elements as a complete one off package.

Stokey Woodall will be in the Azores running a shore based ocean course for the theory side and a one day preparation lecture for the practical elements required to be executed at sea and submitted for scrutiny by the RYA.

On arrival in Portsmouth we will have an RYA Ocean examiner waiting to check the celestial observations taken onboard and then conduct the oral exam the final part needed to complete Ocean Yachtmaster. This will be done on HMS Victory.
